Since I was a child I was drawn to making things with found materials, inspired by leaves, snow, soil, paper, threads and colorful candy wrappers in Kyoto, Japan. Growing up in Kyoto, I learned to appreciate the subtle changes in nature as the seasons merge—as the many kimonos, paintings and textiles I absorbed, embodied these subtleties.

In college, I studied textile, ceramic and glass at Joshibi University of art and design. This is where I learned the process of making glass; using a torch to melt and pull glass like thread, sprinkling various shades of glass to create unique patterns and weaving glass to create one of a kind designs.

Although I moved to Portland Oregon in 1995, in a way nothing has changed. I still feel that same joy from childhood, creating in my studio, fueled by an appreciation for nature and art.
