Carissa Te-Hsuan Chu is an actor and interdisciplinary artist using new media technologies to imagine experimental frontiers for theatre arts. Utilizing game engines, motion capture technologies, and visionary performance processes, she reframes the relationship between past and future through humanist narratives. In Chu’s worlds, she utilizes the metaverse as a way to cultivate transcendental arts and empathetic paradigms for our digital and physical existences. Through the lens of Eastern and Western philosophies, she investigates boundaries of live performance through media fluid forms. She offers narratives and plays recontextualizing buried histories which brings forth the power of authorship to marginalized communities.

Chu currently lives in Portland, Oregon. Born in Taipei, Taiwan, and raised in Sichuan, China, she came to the United States at the age of 19 to pursue studies in theatre arts and philosophy at UC Santa Cruz. Chu is the co-founder and co-artistic director of America Shakes, the creative director of Augury House, as well as an artist-in-residence of the Block 14 Cultural Heritage and Healing Garden.
